Patient's Guide
Patient Companion Information

At Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton it is our goal to provide patients with a safe and healing environment while they are admitted in the hospital. Our nursing staff is specially trained to care for you. We encourage families to take an active role and participate in the patient's care. We recognize that family and friends are an important part of the recovery process and we welcome visitors. For your comfort and the comfort of other patients, we ask all visitors to observe the following:

  • Please be considerate of other patients and limit your visitors to two at a time.
  • The nurse is responsible for insuring the patient's safety and may restrict visitation times to promote periods of rest, protect against possible infections, and to provide care.
  • Children should not be left unattended in any area of the hospital.

Should you want a patient companion, patient care technician or private duty nurse to stay with you, one can be arranged for a fee. Listed below are some agencies that provide these services along with their contact information.

Patient Safety Tips

  • Always wash your hands before and after touching the patient and when entering and leaving the room.
  • Weak or unsteady patients often need support while getting out of bed or going to the bathroom. Please call or ask for assistance rather than trying to support the patient yourself.
  • Be sure that the call bell is placed within reach of your loved one prior to leaving the room.
  • Before taking a walk, make sure your family member has on skid resistant socks. This will prevent falls from occurring.
  • Talk to your family members about pleasant memories. Although their short term memory may be poor, most patients remember the "good old days".
  • Even though you might think that having all four bed side rails up is safer, studies have shown that keeping the top two up is the safest. When all side rails are up, the patient who is confused may try to climb over the rails placing them at risk for falling.
  • If your family member is bored or wants something to keep them occupied, try playing cards. This activity will help pass the time. Playing cards is also fun!
  • Magazines, puzzles and games also make terrific "get well" gifts and provide a welcome diversion for patients to enjoy.
  • Avoid bringing in food for the patient when they are on a restrictive diet. Talk to the nurse about foods to bring in that are acceptable.
  • For your listening pleasure, we now have a music channel on our TV’s - Channel 34.
