Letter to Our Neighbors Highlights People, Quality & Service

4/13/2009
Dear Neighbors,

At RWJ Hamilton we are committed to providing the highest quality healthcare services for our community, county and region. Whether it is acute hospitalization, outpatient diagnostic testing, surgery, maternity/neonatal care, emergency services or rehabilitation, RWJ Hamilton has a diverse offering of services and our plans for the future include more growth.

Committed to "Excellence Through Service" is more than just a catchy slogan; it is a philosophy that describes the dedication and partnership we have with our employees, medical staff, board of directors and volunteers in caring for our community. While RWJ Hamilton is committed to providing modern facilities and technology, it is our people that are the secret to our success.

In 1994, the hospital joined the Robert Wood Johnson System and Network and became affiliated with the University of Medicine and Dentistry New Jersey-RWJ Medical School. This was followed by partnering with the Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ), the state's only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, to create CINJ Hamilton. These alliances have strengthened our ability to provide local access to high-quality medical care, close to home.

Quality Care
Our programs are based on vigorous national standards. Because of our ability to meet strict clinical and safety criteria, we became one of 12 New Jersey hospitals studying elective angioplasty through the prestigious Atlantic Cardiovascular Patients Outcomes Research Team Trial developed by Johns Hopkins University. We also achieved state and national certification for our stroke program, which follows national guidelines established by the State of New Jersey and The Joint Commission to significantly improve the results for stroke patients. When you walk through our doors, you know that you are our highest priority. As one example of why you turn to us, The Joint Commission – our nation's healthcare accreditation organization – ranks our care above the 94th percentile for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), congestive heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care infection prevention. RWJ Hamilton is proud to have a team that doesn't rest on its laurels. We provide the best care by dedicating ourselves to continuous improvement and education. Recognized with the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation's only Presidential award for quality and performance excellence, we've proven we can achieve great things.

Future Growth
In a difficult environment for New Jersey's hospitals, we continue to expand our services. Recently, the RWJ Hamilton Diagnostic & Treatment Center at Columbus opened to better serve our Burlington County patients. Prior to this, we expanded our campus with the Lakefront Tower, adding 64 private patient rooms and dedicated diagnostic and treatment space to enhance our orthopedics, stroke and rehabilitation programs. The tower also includes an expanded maternity unit plus a spacious nursery, in addition to our current Level 2 Special Care Nursery for premature babies. We look forward to launching a wound healing center to help people with problem wounds that arise from chronic diseases and weakened circulation. Our comprehensive heart failure and lipid management program will be the first in the area.

A Relationship Based on Trust
Each year, 54,000 people choose to come through our doors seeking emergency care, making us the busiest emergency department in the county. Not only do we care for you in times of illness, we focus on wellness and prevention. Last year, over 150,000 people chose to live healthier lives by participating in our community classes and screenings held at the RWJ Hamilton Center for Health & Wellness. Hundreds more participated in our diabetes self-management program certified by the American Diabetes Association, and Shapedown, a childhood obesity program recognized statewide for improving the lives of children and families. Our relationship is extended by the care provided to nearly 1,000 children in our seven Lakeview Child Centers. Lakeview helps children from birth to six years grow physically, intellectually, socially and emotionally by providing a developmentally-appropriate curriculum in a safe, nurturing environment.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the RWJ Hamilton Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that raises funds to support patient care. Led by a board of directors and supported by a Young Professionals Group and Auxiliary, the Foundation is currently raising funds for a multi-faith chapel to meet the spiritual needs of patients, their families and our employees.

RWJ Hamilton remains financially sound despite the challenging economic environment in the state and across the nation. Due to the long-range planning by our board of directors and experienced management team, our organization is well positioned to navigate these difficult times and emerge stronger when our economy rebounds. We are proud of our past and grateful for the privilege of providing high quality health care. With the support of our dedicated employees, physicians, volunteers and neighbors, we look forward to new opportunities to promote, preserve and restore the health of our community.
